Bringing health sessions to where you are

A public health practitioner is ready to carry out vital heart health checks in a community space
Image of the crypt at All Saints church, where local community group GrowTH meet

The session at All Saints Church wasn’t a typical health check setting. Held in the crypt of the church, it was organised through GrowTH, a charity supporting people who have experienced homelessness, and attended by people for whom something as straightforward as booking a GP appointment can feel out of reach. Housing insecurity makes everything harder. Including getting healthcare.

Sam had recently been given a new home after a period of homelessness. He came along to the health check and, like others there, found that being in a familiar space with an organisation he already trusted made all the difference.

After his check, Sam told us he’d been worried about recent weight gain. He left with practical dietary advice from the nurse, including suggestions for how to adapt his traditional Congolese meals to support his health goals without abandoning the food he loves.
He told us that if there are too many hoops to jump through, people just don’t bother. Being somewhere he already knew made it feel safe.

Sam asked us to check in with him in a few months to track his progress. We will!

Find your nearest free health check

Your GP is always a good first port of call for any health concerns. If you are aged 40 to 74 and registered with a GP in England, you should also be invited for a free NHS Health Check every five years, covering your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. But you don't always have to wait for an appointment. There are other ways to get checked locally.

Ideas Store SiSU Health Stations

There are self-service health check kiosks in Idea Stores across Tower Hamlets. They’re free to use and give instant results on blood pressure, weight, and BMI. No sign up needed, just drop-in.

Find your nearest pharmacy

If you are aged 40 or over and not currently on blood pressure medication, many local pharmacies can check your blood pressure for free. A pharmacy team member will take a quick reading and let you know what it means, including whether you need to follow up with your GP.
